It’s all about the 5.7 km of tarmac between La Rösa and Hospizio Bernina – in fact the most appealing stretch of the Bernina Pass road. Over 50 curves wind up 459 vertical meters from 1.871 m to the very top of this great road at 2.330 m above sea level. The surface has almost race track quality and you can’t think of a better road for a real hillclimb race. A great safety concept makes the track suitable not only for „normal“ race and sports cars but also for Formula cars of all kind.
There is even a historic model, the Bernina Grand Prix, which was the most important part of the „Automobilwoche St. Moritz“ back in 1929 and 1930.
Now in it’s third year, the Bernina Gran Turismo proceeds on it’s successful way to former glory. Additional events build up around the race, all prepared to revive the St. Moritz Car Week in full scale in the near future.
There are six runs on the closed road, two of which are test runs and a total of four timed competition runs. This, together with the wild nature and the unbelievable scenery, as well as the professional management of the race and the fact that it is a real race, distinguishes the Bernina Gran Turismo from other events.
What Bernina Gran Turismo will not become is a big, overcrowded event: There is a maximum of 80 starters and the focus is on great cars with great drivers and great camaraderie – all this within a very sophisticated and friendly grass-roots event, with first class racing, the best race management available as well as extensive safety arrangements,. Not to forget the unique off-track St. Moritz lifestyle. The soon to be famous BGT-Kick-Off Party in St. Moritz’s infamous though mysterious Dracula Club will become a must-go prior to the race which you don’t want to miss. One of the limited tickets is CHF 99, but all drinks of the evening are included – no extra costs!
Our pilot project of th „Autofilmtage St. Moritz“ will mark the start of a new event which will grow in the future. A film festival, dedicated especially to car movies. To get started, we show 3 car movies this year: On Wednesday, Sept. 20th, at 8:30 pm it is „Le Mans“, the cult movie with Steve McQueen, on Friday, Sept. 22nd, at 5 pm you have the chance to watch „RUSH“, the movie about the battle between Niki Lauda and James Hunt and on Friday, the 23rd, also at 5 pm, the new french action movie „Overdrive“ is on the schedule. The venue ist he old theater at Hotel Reine Victoria in St. Moritz Bad.
Another cherry on the race-cake is the new partnership between Bernina Gran Turismo and Rhaetische Bahn – the railway which became UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE. The history of the Rhaetische Bahn dates back to the late 19th century when brave and forward minded engineers developed a plan to bring public transport to the Engadine valleys. So climb aboard, a historic showpiece from the pioneering days of railway engineering awaits! Not only participants will enjoy a ride on a chartered train, but also visitors will have the chance to ride on one of the ten historic extra trains running up and down the Bernina Pass between St. Moritz/Pontresina and the top of the pass at Hospizio Bernina. Visitors pay only the regular fare, the exact timetable can be seen on the website www.bernina-granturismo.com. And if you miss it – there will be some historic busses to shuttle visitors from Diavolezza to the finish line. Historic Motoring and Transportation at it’s best and for sure the only race event which partners up with historic trains AND busses.
The date for this year, September 22nd to 24th, also indicates the plannig horizon for upcoming years. But if you don’t want to wait and rather participate in 2017 give it a try and get in touch with the organizers at email@example.com. You never know.
